The San Francisco Fringe Festival, the largest grass roots theater festival in the Bay Area, presents 150 performances by indie theater artists each September in downtown San Francisco. The SF Fringe is produced by EXIT Theatre, an independent theater company founded in 1983 that operates five storefront theaters in San Franciscos Tenderloin neighborhood.
